What can you use the app for?

Babel Fish is an online language translator that lets users convert from and into many languages. The tool is available as soon as the user arrives on the homepage. Users can type or paste up to 150 words into the field provided. A second field is available for a website URL if the user has an entire site they wish to translate.

The site recommends that the user make sure grammar, spelling and punctuation is correct to ensure an accurate translation. The user can also compare the translated page with the original by clicking the “View page in its original language” option.

A Babel Fish toolbar is available and can be installed in the user’s web browser.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Babel Fish is currently owned by Yahoo. The application was named for the fictional language translator fish introduced in Douglas Adam’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The site was originally found at an AltaVista domain but was moved to a Yahoo domain in May of 2008.

The application has received plenty of attention as a quick and easy language translator. Users find that it isn’t always accurate, but many issues stem from the source material rather than the translator.

What are the differences to other apps?

Babel Fish is easily one of the easiest and most convenient language translators offered on the web today. The application can be accessed as soon as the user comes to its Yahoo web page. The application asks for the text or URL and nothing more. Simple instructions are provided, but most users will not need them because of how user friendly Babel Fish is. The application has made a name for itself as the most convenient go-to resource for quick language translations.

Alternative Apps
How does the web app look and feel to use?

Babel Fish is designed for simplicity. Users are presented with a few fields, one for text and one for a URL as well as a drop down box with language combinations. The entire process is self-explanatory thanks to the applications’ simple design. The site is branded by Yahoo and includes one or two advertisements. The advertisements are noticeable but stay well out of the way. Users can visit the site and start translating in a matter of seconds.

How does the registration process work?

Babel Fish doesn’t require an account to use. Anyone can visit the site and start translating text or a website. Yahoo offers a registration option, but it is not needed for Babel Fish. There is really no reason for the user to create a Yahoo account just to try Babel Fish. Users can visit as often as they like. All fields are presented right on the homepage and the user doesn’t have to give any personal data to use them.

What does it cost to use the application?

Babel Fish is available to all internet users for free. There are no subscription fees and users can translate without an account. The service is very convenient, but it’s also not perfect or feature-packed. Additional functions would be needed to charge for a subscription. The free price makes Babel Fish extremely popular for users who need a fast translation. Users can translate web pages or text as often as they like.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Babel Fish is ideal for anyone who needs a quick language translation. The application can manage many different languages and takes only seconds to use. Entire websites or a small portion of text can be translated.

Babel Fish is best suited for casual translations, such as a piece of content the user wants to understand, rather than professional purposes. Users can communicate better and learn what others are saying online regardless of language barriers.

  • Translate content for free online
  • Text can be copy and pasted or typed in
  • Web page translates are available
  • Many language combinations are offered
  • No registration is required to use the translator
